Spring Sunday at the Local Organic Farm
What a beautiful day! This morning I sat in the yard on my swing and read a book. Both dogs laid lazily at my feet at we basked in the spring sun.
I then took a drive over to my favorite local organic farm, Blooming Hill Farm on Route 208 in Blooming Grove,
Late morning sun blanketed the gardens that line either side of the gravel path that leads to an old converted barn they have transformed into a busting center of community activity.
This week's spring harvest included ramps, beautiful Yukon Gold potatoes, beautiful, large yellow onions, perfect leeks (all the same size and diameter), fresh burdock root, magnificent large button mushrooms, nettles, Italian kale, and really robust fresh ginger and wild mint.
Because they supply produce to Balthazar each week, they bring up all sorts of wonderful fresh-baked French breads and pastries to sell at the farm with their organic coffee, homemade lemonade and iced teas.
As usual, Nadine and several young assistants were preparing breakfast of either Belgian waffles with strawberry compote, sautéed potato-ramp salad with fresh goat cheese or vegetable cheese omelets, for the groups people that gather once a week for fresh organic produce, wholesome breakfasts, and a sense of community.
In honor of Mother's day, Guy (the owner) worked the outside grill where he prepared grilled ramps, mimosas and the occasional shot of whiskey for everyone.
The stream running through the farm ran rapid and deep – as it usually does in the spring – and children skipped stones or tried to catch frogs with nets while their parents lingered over coffee and chatted with their neighbors.
This afternoon, I will prepare a dinner with my fresh organic produce that consists of a potato-leek soup; sautéed ramps with garlic, olive oil and potato gnocchi, and a ginger panna cotta.
I'll also make a mint iced tea with laverdar simple syrup.
I will tincture the burdock root to use as an immune builder during the winter months and I'm thinking of buying some lump crab meat and stuffing those button mushrooms.
Anyone hungry?
